Santa and his Elf attracted many visitors and our donkeys Tammy and Alice worked really hard to provide rides around the farm.  Visitors watched the blacksmits working at the Forge and enjoyed homemade soup, mulled wine and roast chestnuts to keep away the cold.

Home Made Jam and ChutneyA wide range of farm produce was on sale including honey, jams, chutney, herb vinegar and oil, beeswax candles and free range meat.

A big thank you to Hilde Kappelhoff for co-ordinating the event and to everyone who helped out on the day.

Willow and Wilma both give birth

Willow and her new CalfWillow gave birth to a healthy bull calf, early in the morning on Wednesday 10th December 2008.  Willow's half sister Wilma also gave birth to her own bull calf on Monday 15th December.  The two births mean that both Willow and Wilma, who were donated to the farm by a retired farmer who bred Red Polls, have now matured from heifers into cows.  Come along to the farm and see them!

Christmas Fair & Bacon Day 2008

Santa at the Christmas FairMore than 800 visitors attended the farm's Christmas fair on a very cold but sunny winter's day.  A total of £5000 was taken through sales of meat, Christmas trees, Christmas wreaths, donkey rides, crafts, farm produce and donations.

Bacon on sale at the Christmas FairVisitors enjoyed a BBQ with sausages made from our own pork and made Christmas wreaths to take home.  Children got to meet Santa and his elf, listened to stories in the hay barn and made Christmas cards and tree decorations.

A big thank you must go to Eric our butcher, who worked very hard on the day, and to everyone who helped with the event.

Mobile Farm Project

Cheque from the People's MillionsThank you to everybody who voted for the Surrey Docks Farm "Mobile Farm" project on  ITV's People's Millions.  We now have funding to buy transport!

We will be able to go out into the Community to visit as many schools and festivals as we can with as many animals as we can.  Our new "Mobile Farm" will really extend our outreach and help us fulfill one of the Farm’s most important founding principles – to educate.   Money from the People’s Millions will enable this.  We can now buy a customised horsebox for transporting all the animals and fences that we need.  We will be able to reach so many more children who might otherwise not get to see a cow or a goat in the middle of London or, in some cases, even know what one looks like.  Thank you so much to everybody who supported us.

Apple Day 2008

Apple DayApple day at Surrey Docks Farm was a huge success.  800 visitors came through the gates and a total of £1800 was taken by the stalls, cafe, raffle, donkey rides and donations.  There were many activities for children including the 'longest peel' competition and apple bobbing.  There was apple pressing to have a go at and cider tasting for those over 18!  A big thank you has to go to Cath Knight who organised the whole event and to all those who helped to make it such a big success.

Butcher Eric Reeve making sausagesAs part of the year of food and farming and to connect children to what they eat, a Sausage Day event was held 4 May to go through the process of raised and then cooked meat. Local residents and children made, and ate sausages with Eric Reeve from Borough Market. Sausages were also on the menu at the Café served up by Bob, the Chef.

Odessa Street Youth Club visit
Kevin Boys in actionAt the beginning of April Kevin Boys, blacksmith at the farm and his team visited the Odessa Street Youth Club with the mobile forge, working with The Safer Neighbourhood team, Kickz and drug awareness. Local youth turning knives into flowersKevin and his team of blacksmiths were showing the young people that knives, confiscated by the police, are just pieces of metal that can be made into something much more beautiful - flowers! The message that the youth team and the police were giving out; carrying a knife makes you more likely to be a victim of violent crime. Along with good food and music, this was a very successful event.

Lots of babies arriving
New born lambsApril was another successful month with lots of babies arriving! Firstly 'Lambchop' closely followed by kids after kids and another pair of lambs. The latest arrivals, piglets!  In total the farm has 3 lambs, 9 kids and 10 piglets. Dingle, the new calf is not the youngest anymore but is still insisting on drinking milk from a bottle!
